Review of “Wizard’s First Rule”

As many of you saw, I am currently re-reading the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.  I was asked by a few friends to please post my opinions on the series as I reread.  So… here’s the first book.

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1)Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

‘Wizard’s First Rule’ by Terry Goodkind (Book #1 of the Sword of Truth Series) was engaging from the start. The story flowed well and as I enjoyed this book, I recommend ‘Wizard’s First Rule’ to any fantasy lover that has the time to read large works of art.

At 863 pages it seems like it should be dull and fluffed out with drivel to make the page count but honestly I think if he had removed any part of this story it would have desiccated the overall plot and enjoyment of ‘Wizard’s First Rule.’

The characters in ‘Wizard’s First Rule’ is what makes this story what it is! Richard Cypher is the reluctant hero, though what a hero! Sexy, powerful, loyal. He is the “Seeker of Truth,” so named by the First Wizard Zedd. Kahlan is intelligent, resourceful, yet fearful and alone. She is power itself in their world but she suffers because of her power. She cannot have true (consummated) love without destroying her beloved. And Zedd, such a lovable, eccentric wizard! I just loved him. He may be my favourite character.

Both Richard and Kahlan have to learn to navigate the world and their budding relationship all while having to defend the weak and fight to destroy the evil that is spreading across their world. There are multiple story plots working at once but I loved the complexity and depth. And trust me, the villain is truly… frighteningly sick.

Warning: Violence (but it’s part of the story not just for violence sake). Not your kids fantasy book.

A love story with swords, destroying touches, and a crazy wizard. I look forward to reading the next book, “Stone of Tears.’ I give ‘Wizard’s First Rule’ 5.

Just the Facts Ma’am

A friend of mine suggested that I should try using memes to let others get to know more about me.  There might even be days that I get Declán or Nicholas in on them (we’ll see F5DDGDQQHT36).  Today’s is a Just The Facts Meme.

Random Fact about Moi #1:
I love the colour of silver even though we vampires are allergic to it.

Random Fact about Moi #2:
My greatest love, other than Nicholas and Declán, is reading.  I have an entire adjunct area to my bedroom that serves as my reading room and a library downstairs.  I still end up giving away books regularly. There are always groups needing books for schools, the  underprivileged, the sick (in hospitals), et all.

Random Fact about Moi #3:
I tend to rant in Irish, even when I don’t realize I’ve slipped languages.  Sometimes this is a problem since no one I live with speaks Irish.  One day they will learn, ha.

Random Fact about Moi #4:
I don’t hate being a vampire.  You would think I would considering all the horrid things that have happened to me but while I detest some of the other vampires – say Marcus and Gabriel – I don’t hate the life I have.

Random Fact about Moi #5
One of my favourite singers is Enya.  I love being able to hear my lovely Irish being sung by such a beautiful voice.

Random Fact about Moi #6:
What the guys own of me: M’anam, mo chroí, mo ghrá.

Random Fact about Moi #7:
I don’t understand why the gender of a person should matter.  Isn’t it who a person is not what shape they inhabit that makes them who they are?

Random Fact about Moi #8:
I miss Star.

  • What was the last book you were really EXCITED to read?

Foxe Tail by Haley Walsh (book #1 of the Skyler Fox Mysteries) – “Young. Gay. Teaches High School. Solves Crimes. What’s Up With That?”

  • And, were you excited about it in advance?  Or did the excitement bloom while you were reading it?

I started off a bit sceptical but a friend of mine assured me that I would LOVE it.  I was very quickly drawn into the story and did, in fact, enjoy it.  It’s well written with fun, engaging characters.

  • Are there any books you’re excited about right NOW?

Oh definitely!  As I have recently posted, I am VERY excited about the new book by Terry Goodkind, The Omega Machine.  While the Sword of Truth series ended with Confessor, Richard and Kahlan continue in the newest book, The Omega Machine (Aug 16, 2011).

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments – or it you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

WWW Wednesdays

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

My answers:

What are you currently reading? I am still rereading “Wizards First Rule” by Terry Goodkind. Terry’s written a new book, “The Omega Machine” so I’ve decided to reread the entire series before reading the new one (Due out August 16, 2011)

What did you recently finish reading? I finished reading “Without Reservations” by J.L. Langley.  This is an 18+ M/M read.  I enjoyed the entire Without series.

What do you think you’ll read next? After I finish “Wizard’s First Rule“, I’m still going to be busy with the Sword of Truth series.  There are twelve (count them 12) books in the series so it will take me a week or two to finish.  I read fast but still. Winking smile
