"All things are composed of patterns…" And within the pattern of the realm of Alorin, three strands must cross:

In Alorin…three hundred years after the genocidal Adept Wars, the realm is dying, and the blessed Adept race dies with it. One man holds the secret to reverting this decline: Bjorn van Gelderan, a dangerous and enigmatic man whose shocking betrayal three centuries past earned him a traitor’s brand. It is the Adept Vestal Raine D’Lacourte’s mission to learn what Bjorn knows in the hope of salvaging his race. But first he’ll have to find him…

In the kingdom of Dannym…the young Prince Ean val Lorian faces a tenuous future as the last living heir to the coveted Eagle Throne. When his blood-brother is slain during a failed assassination, Ean embarks on a desperate hunt for the man responsible. Yet his advisors have their own agendas, and his quest for vengeance leads him ever deeper into a sinuous plot masterminded by a mysterious and powerful man, the one they call First Lord…

In the Nadori desert…tormented by the missing pieces of his life, a soldier named Trell heads off to uncover the truth of his shadowed past. But when disaster places him in the debt of Wildlings sworn to the First Lord, Trell begins to suspect a deadlier, darker secret motivating them.

A character study on one of my females.

In this post, I wanted to talk a little about the character Alyneri d’Giverny.

Alyneri is a member of the realm of Alorin’s blessed Adept race. This means she was born with the ability to access the lifeforce that roams her world and use it to work the unique patterns that compel the energies of life, healing men of most any ill. This skill makes her valuable to her king. Yet because her father was a foreign prince, she faces ostracism from the nobles of the Court, who cannot accept her as an equal among them.

Her life thus far has been fraught with tragedy. Her princely father died when she was ten, and her duchess mother three years later. The King of Dannym placed her in his protection, but her exotic looks keep her from fitting in with Dannym’s porcelain nobility. She feels terribly alone in the world and wants desperately to study at the famous Sormitage University, where she could learn to do far more with the lifeforce than merely heal. She yearns for the adventures her own mother claimed in her youth. Yet her king needs her there at his side. Thus Alyneri faces a bleak future–she feels chained to a throne amid a kingdom of viperous nobles who would just as soon destroy her as use her to their own ends. As she laments: "She’d tried living among her mother’s northern friends, but without the Lady Melisande to dignify Alyneri’s presence, they’d looked upon her like a rather exotic and unusual dandelion: idly interesting, a topic of speculation to be certain, but still, ultimately, a weed."

As Cephrael’s Hand unfolds, Alyneri finds hope when she’s asked to join her king’s only surviving son on a righteous, if vengeful, quest. Yet while Prince Ean’s journey offers escape from Dannym’s spiteful nobility, Alyneri feels no safer in Ean’s companionship. They were childhood sweethearts before tragedy plucked them from sheltered lives and cast them instead onto treacherous paths, and though she’d vowed to stop loving Ean val Lorian, the handsome prince remains lodged in her heart.

Alyneri must reconcile her feelings for Ean with her fears of being forever tied to the throne of a kingdom that despises her. As the river of their quest tumbles into increasingly dangerous waters, she finally finds the adventure she’s craved, but at what price?
