The wonderful Daryl Devoré stopped by today. Make sure you check out her interview below!
Sold by her family to become a submissive courtesan to a powerful man, Branwyn arrives in a strange new land ruled by the castle of Black Dorn. Horrified by Branwyn’s lack of knowledge regarding relations between a man and his woman, her instructor, Duna Trea, begins her daily lesson in the art of bedding a man.
Welcome to the House Millar, Daryl. Thanks for stopping by and answering a few questions for us, your loyal and loving fans. I’d like to start with you sharing a little about yourself. When did you start writing, how long and what do you write?
My family and I live in rural Ontario. We enjoy the outdoors in both winter and summer. In winter, we snow shoe in the back bush where we see deer, moose and the occasional wolf and coyote. In the summer, we like to kayak out on the St. Lawrence River, where we dodge pleasure crafts and ocean going freighters.
I started writing waaaay back in elementary school. Erotic romances are my main focus, I have written 2 contemporary erotic romances – A Kept Woman and Sexy Red Hood and an historical erotic romance – Black Dorn.
I just love Ontario. My family and I used to visit family up there every summer. What can you tell us about Black Dorn that isn’t in the blurb or excerpt? Was it an easy write? How long did it take you to write it?
Black Dorn is about the sexual education of a young 13th century girl named Arianne. The story wasn’t difficult to write. I had to do some research, which I love to do. The sex scenes are the hardest to write – getting all the right parts in the right places. I don’t remember how long it took to write – I guess a month. I overwrote the book – too many scenes. Then I edited it and underwrote it.
Are you a pantser or plotter? What can you tell us a little about your writing process?
Totally a panster. My characters are completely in charge. It’s fun to see where they take me. I might have an idea that the scene should go a certain way, but I soon find myself going in a different direction.
My writing process is – if the words are flowing – just write. Get everything out and onto the screen then go back and edit. If it is a day when my creativity is low – I’ll go back and edit a scene or a chapter until the words begin to flow.
My characters tend to be wilful as well, but that’s why we love ‘em. What can we expect from you in the future?
I’m currently writing an erotic fantasy – Capri’s Fate. It is about a female corporate vice president who falls in love with a voice. The first 5 chapters are done and it’s pretty hot. Writing a sex scene with a human and a voice was an interesting challenge.
If you could be any fictional character—including your own, who would you choose and why?
This is hard. Choosing one of my own would be too easy. So, I let this tumble around in the back of my brain and finally had a light bulb! moment. Cinderella. Young girls dream of their Prince Charming. In Black Dorn, Arianne is thrown into a situation that she must prove strong to struggle through and there she meets and wins her Prince. I guess I like the romance of the concept.
What is your favourite TV show or movie?
Bones! Love the relationship between Brennan and Booth.
Oh my, yes! This season is hilarious, too. And last but not least, what’s one of your favourite quotes?
A toss up between two – Save the planet. It’s the only one with chocolate — or — Come to the dark side – we have cookies! I have a bit of a twisted sense of humour.
Love the quotes! Thanks for stopping by and putting up with all my nosiness.
Everyone, please take a moment to check out Black Dorn and Daryl’s other great reads!
