Interview: Heather M. White

I am a returning resident to Arkansas. I just migrated south from Saint Louis, MO with my husband. We have almost been married a year. 🙂

I love to write. I have been writing since I was a kid – literally. I decided in the 2nd grade I would write a book. I wrote lots of stories and poems… And did I mention I wrote over 200 songs? (Yeah, I’m a musician too). So I wrote my very first novel at the ripe age of 14… My Mom still has it :-/. Ok, so maybe it wasn’t my best work, but I had a LOT of fun writing it!

I started college at the young age of 17. (I graduated high school at 16). And my English papers were always a hit in my classroom. Somebody told me “you should make that story into a book”. I pushed it to the back of my mind… Until recently.

When I’m not writing, I am normally reading. I am also a caffeine addict.

Where were you born and where do you call home?
I was born, and raised in Arkansas – a SUPER SMALL TOWN! I moved to St. Louis a few years, but I eventually flew back home.

What or who inspired you to write? And how long have you been writing?

I have been writing FOREVER, literally. I have written over 200+ songs. I wrote my first completed book at the age of 14… Writing is a part of who I am.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
A lot of people have different opinions about this… Is it when my first poem got published at the age of 10? Is it when I started making money from songs I wrote at 14? Is it when I published my first book December 2011? Really, I think I have always been a writer.
Which character speaks the loudest, to you? Do any of them clamour to be heard over the others? Do your characters try to make like bunnies and create ever more convoluted plots for you? Or do you have to coax them out of your characters?
Once I start writing, my characters change. They turn into their OWN person, and it’s not always the person I thought they would be! My characters speak loud to me and they tell me exactly what they want.
Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?
Well, I do name some of my characters after friends and family – Tabatha (friend), Erica (cousin), etc. It’s fun that way! And they think it’s cool to see their name on print!
As long as Tabatha isn’t LIKE the character, eak.  Do you have a specific writing style?
My writing style is… I get an idea, I write an outline. I write first chapter. And then, it usually never ends up like my outline! It just flows. Whatever happens, happens. My stories really write their self… Well, not really, haha… BUT – they are usually NOTHING like the outline in the end.
How did you come up with the title?
When I was writing the first chapter I came up with the title… First I was going to name it “The Fairytale Life of a Vampire Hunter”, but My Fairytale Life was shorter and seemed to fit better for the series.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
You don’t need a guy to save you. You can kick butt all on your own
Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
This book is the first in the Vampire Hunter Series! I have the first chapter wrote in book 2, but that’s it so far. I plan to start working on the second book around May or June.
Who designed the cover of your book?
I did! I found this picture and thought it was perfect! The girl crying really captures my story… I fell in love immediately!
I have to agree. Love the cover! Where do you see yourself in five (5) years?
NY Times Best Seller? Movie deals? THE SKY IS THE LIMIT! I dream big. Either way, I know I will still be writing.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Florida, because I love the heat and the sun.
Ick, you can have my share, lol. Native born Floridian but hate the humidity, heat and bugs, lol. Do you prefer eBooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
I prefer eBooks honestly… Have you read a paperback/ hardcover novel at night??? I’d much rather hold up my phone than a physical book!
Are you a self published (Indie) Author or big trad published?
SELF PUBLISHED! I truly enjoy the freedom. I can write whatever I want to!
What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
Well, I can say I WILL stick to YA. I have an idea for a YA Contemporary Romance. I also have an idea for a YA SiFi novel… And SO MANY MORE!
How do you market/promote your books?
My blog, Twitter, Facebook… Everywhere I can be I’m there! Also – BOOK BLOGGERS ARE THE BEST! They’ve helped my sales tremendously!
What do you think makes a book a really good/bestseller ?
Well the #1 thing is the story. How well is it paced? Does it keep me interested? #2, book cover! It’s VERY IMPORTANT! I see that now!
Have you ever suffered from a “writer’s block”? What did you do to get past the “block”?
YES, I have. Who hasn’t? Music is my #1 inspiration. Other books inspire me… I take a break when I have writers block.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
Every Wednesday night I hang out with my best friend, Leah. We watch True Blood, or Vampire Diaries, we eat junk food and we just talk. It makes me feel like a teenager again!
Have you ever read a book more than once?
YES! I find myself re-reading books ALL the time! Every time I read a book, I get more out of it!
Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?
I prefer the TV show Vampire Diaries over the book!
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Just DO IT. If you want to write a book, do it. Make a schedule, even if you can only devote 30 minutes a night to writing, it’s a start.
What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing?
Edit, edit, edit! And then, EDIT MORE! It’s very important! Even if you don’t have the money! Find 5 friends to proof read! It’s so important.
What are your pet peeves?
People who leave their blinker on for miles at a time, it’s SO annoying!
Coffee or tea?
Can I have Dr. Pepper instead?
LOL, of course. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream?
Rocky road.
Yum! What are 4 things you never leave home without?
Car (obviously), iPhone, purse and a pony tail holder (it’s important, OK!)
Laptop or desktop for writing?
I use a laptop! So much easier, I can drag it anywhere!
Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
I write: on kitchen table mostly, some on couch. I do my best writing either EARLY MORNING (like 1am to 5am) or LATE NIGHT (any time after 8pm).
If you were deserted on an island, who are 3 famous people you would want with you?
Jensen Ackles (hello, I want to be able to fight off bad stuff). Ian Somerholder (enough said). And, Jim Carey strictly for HUMOR… Hello, it’s going to be boring!
An actor you have a crush on –
Ian Somerhalder (Damon from Vampire Diaries).
