Ben and Kianas are the two loves in Laurel’s life and the choices she makes are tantamount to what the future holds for her and the people she loves. Ben, a love from her past has just come back into her life. Kianas is a new love who promises a future that she could never have imagined, on another world called Htrae.
Htrae is a world from another universe. A world filled with beauty beyond belief and danger that threatens Laurel’s life and her ability to hold on to her past. If she allows Kianas to turn her she may never be a part of her son’s life. However, if she stays human she could die.
Interview with a Vampire Called Naken
I would like to introduce Naken who is a character in Dreams and Vampires. Hello Naken and thank you for participating with this interview.
Who are you and how do you interact with the main character Laurel?
I am a part of a team of extractors who work for the King of Htrae. Laurel is very instrumental in helping me find the twin “seeds” who have been living on Earth since early childhood and are ready to come back to our world. You see, each of the “seeds” at the age of forty, is programmed to have a spiral tattooed on the right side of their neck. This usually triggers dream memories connecting them to their twin on Htrae. This allows us to find them but sometimes it takes longer for the dreams to start. Because Laurel is a hypnotherapist for some reason the “seeds” are drawn to her for help with the dreams and when she regresses them the connection with their twin is much stronger. There are other therapists who do this as well but I noticed something special about Laurel. She has an unusual connection with Htrae and Kianas, who is like a brother to me. It is because of me that she and Kianas were brought together. Htrae is now Laurel’s home and when she is turned she will not be allowed to go back to earth.
Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
For the most part, you see Dee has a sarcastic since of humor which I like but she could have made me a little scarier. I was trying to scare Laurel so she would be more cooperative but Laurel is a very strong woman and didn’t scare for long. Even though I spend a great deal of time with Kianas and his sister Kiina, I live in my own villa and am gone for long periods of time. My work for the King is very demanding when I am retrieving the “seeds” because I also have to relocate them in a holding house. They are there until the sickness passes then I have to make arrangements for them to be reunited with their families and hopefully their twins. Dee didn’t think to mention that in her book. I did like her portrayal of me as the young vampire who is mature beyond his seemingly young years and is always popping in and out of her life on earth.
What if anything haunts you?
My part in the hundred years war. I was a human when the war started and I worked in the city with Kainas, who was also a human. When the war broke out between the Vampires and Werewolves many were killed during the first ten years of the war. Humans and witches tried to stay out of the war but when the numbers began to fall the Vampire soldier’s were sent out to find humans to turn. Kina and Kianas were the first among us to be turned and they lost their parents because they were considered too old to soldiers. The old king wanted young warriors to fight in the war. I managed to evade the soldiers for a long time because I found a group of humans hiding in the Mysterious Mountian caves who were going out and rescuing other humans, bringing them to safety. I watched many of the ones I saved die when the werewolves tried to turn them and were unsuccessful. Children were rounded up and used as food for the Vampire, many of whom I knew. I can see them in my dreams. It is the children who haunt me.
Who was your first love?
Ahhhh . . . her name is Sinka. She and I were only eighteen when we were turned. We were together when the Vampire soldiers captured us. I was trying to get her and a group of humans to safety. It was a long trip from the city to the Mysterious Mountains and the cave settlement. She was by herself when I found her in an abandoned building. I was following a lead about a group of humans who had been hiding out in the city for five years and our informant in the kings service told us the vampire soldiers and the werewolves were on their way to capture them. Sinka and I fell in love while we were looking for the humans. We hung on to each other when we were captured and turned, but it was obvious to the leader of the camp we were in, so he separated us. She is also an extractor now but she works on another continent on earth, Europe I believe you call it, so we drifted apart. I miss her sometimes.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world that didn’t affect you personally, what would it be?
I would plant the seed of compassion and remove the fear in King Kassans heart so that he would allow his people to live in harmony instead of hiding in fear of their lives. The King is basically a good man but the war took a lot out of him and now he is afraid of a prophecy that, at one time, gave us all hope that one day a descendant from our first King Lysander would bring peace to our world. He sees the prophecy as one who would usurp him as King. The witches and humans suffer most because of his fear.
What makes you think that change would be for the better?
I have been to Earth many times and even though there is still war going on I have also seen how wrong segregation is and what it does to people. I have also seen what happens when there is no segregation. We are a segregated people on a planet that no longer connects us to each other. That connection would be restored if the King were to let go of his fear and allowed us to be who we all are. The children of Htrae.
Was there a major turning point in your life?
Yes. When the war ended many of us were released we were not the same. We were broken and filled with hate because our lives were taken from us. I joined a group of vampire and werewolf renegades. We fed on humans we happened to come across and pillaged farms and villages for food and whatever pleasure we could find. One night we came across Kianas’ villa. There were only five of us on a food raid. Most of the villas have loweshas, it is an animal like a cow on earth but it produces blood and when used only a few times in a moon they would live a long time.
Kianas was on his way back from a visit with his friend Oruick who is the Werewolf Alpha, when he caught me trying to steal one of his loweshas. My friends were scared off by a group of male humans but not before they beheaded one of them. Kianas and Kiina remembered me and when we sat down and shared our stories of the war I realized they had lost much more than I did. I was ashamed of what I had become. Kianas offered me a chance to work for the king and live on his land in my own villa. He could have killed me but Kianas is a special vampire, I have never known anyone who has so much compassion for the people that inhabit this world. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with Kiina, she and I are making plans to become mates.
What in your past would you like to forget?
The war, the people I lost and those that I killed. When I was killing for the king, I had no idea why I had to kill. None of it made since to any of us and we were powerless to do anything about it. The best thing about the war was when the old king was killed and his son Kassan and Orruck the werewolf alpha came together to make a truce that ended the war. We lost a great deal of technology in the war and we are finally getting it back again.
